Most modern trading platforms include VWAP as a built-in indicator. TradingView, NinjaTrader, ThinkOrSwim, and others all have VWAP. Some platforms also offer deviation bands. If your platform doesn't have it, third-party indicators are available.
VWAP is the same on all timeframes because it's cumulative. Use 5-minute charts for most trading - They provide good balance of detail and clarity. 1-minute is useful for precise entries. 15-minute works for less active monitoring.
Generally no. VWAP is an intraday indicator that resets each session. Hold trades only during the same session. Close positions by 3:45 PM ET. Overnight holding loses the VWAP reference since it resets.
Best time is 9:00-11:30 AM ET when volume is highest. VWAP is most reliable with high volume. Avoid 12:00-1:30 PM (lunch lull) and after 3:30 PM. On EIA days (Wednesday), avoid 10:25-10:45 AM spike.
First touch of VWAP typically has strongest bounce. Second touch is still reliable. After 3+ touches, the level weakens as orders get filled. Expect potential break rather than bounce after multiple touches.
Most platforms: Look for VWAP settings and enable standard deviation bands. TradingView: Some VWAP indicators include bands, or add 'VWAP with Standard Deviation Bands.' Set to 1σ and 2σ. Color code bands differently from VWAP line.
Session VWAP: Resets at session start, standard reference for day trading. Anchored VWAP: Starts from a point you choose (swing high, news event, etc.), shows average cost since that point. Use both - session for intraday, anchored for context.
Wednesday EIA release at 10:30 AM causes high volatility. Avoid VWAP trades during the spike (10:25-10:45). After spike settles (around 10:45-11:00), VWAP becomes useful for direction. Trade post-news VWAP bounces in the data direction.
Valid VWAP break has: Strong candle (large body, small wicks), volume spike (1.5x+ average), momentum indicators confirming, and price staying on new side. Weak breaks have small candles, low volume, and often reverse. Wait for retest for better entries.
Trend day: Price stays on one side of VWAP, VWAP slope in one direction, clear higher highs (or lower lows). Range day: Multiple VWAP crosses, price oscillates around VWAP, no clear direction. First hour often reveals the day type. Adapt strategy accordingly.
Use weekly VWAP as major bias filter. Above weekly VWAP = Overall bullish (prefer daily long setups). Below = Bearish (prefer shorts). Only trade daily VWAP setups aligned with weekly direction. Confluence of both VWAPs at same price = Very strong level.
Order flow (delta, footprint) confirms VWAP setups. At VWAP bounce: Positive delta = Buyers stepping in (confirms long). Absorption at VWAP = Strong level. High delta confirmation = Full size entry. Weak/negative delta = Skip or smaller size.
Components: VWAP calculation, trend detection (price vs VWAP), entry logic (at VWAP with candle pattern), stop/target. Add filters: Volume, time, news. Backtest on intraday data with realistic costs. Paper trade 1-3 months. Platforms: NinjaTrader, TradingView Pine Script, Python.
Price breaks VWAP (appears to change direction), but immediately reverses back through VWAP. This traps breakout traders and creates opportunity to trade the reversal. Often leads to strong move opposite the failed break. Enter on reversal candle confirmation.
Use USO for options. VWAP bounce long: Buy ATM call. VWAP rejection short: Buy ATM put. Short-dated expiration (same/next week). Exit quickly on reversal - time decay works against you. Defined risk approach for volatile instrument.
