Market Profile uses TIME (TPOs - Time Price Opportunities) to build the profile, showing where time was spent. Volume Profile uses VOLUME. Both reveal market structure and value, but weight differently. Market Profile shows time acceptance; Volume Profile shows volume acceptance.
Standard Market Profile uses 30-minute TPO periods for daily profiles. For day trading, focus on the current session's profile. For swing trading, use composite profiles (5-20 day). Always check prior day's profile for context.
The Value Area is the price range containing approximately 70% of the TPOs (time spent). It represents where the market found fair value - the range where most trading activity occurred. VAH is the upper boundary; VAL is the lower.
Trend days often start with a narrow Initial Balance followed by a strong break. Look for: narrow IB, open drive, one-time framing (each period makes new extreme), and elongated profile developing. If you see these, don't fade - trade with the trend.
Many platforms offer Market Profile: TradingView (requires Pro+), Sierra Chart, NinjaTrader, ThinkOrSwim, and Bloomberg. Some are included; others require add-ons. For Canadian markets, ensure the platform supports TSX/MX data.
Compare IB width to historical average. Wide IB suggests rotation (fade extremes). Narrow IB suggests breakout potential (trade the break). IB high/low become key reference levels. Track IB extensions - how many IB ranges price travels beyond.
Opening types describe where the market opens relative to prior day's value: In Value (neutral), Above Value (bullish gap), Below Value (bearish gap). They set initial bias. Then watch for acceptance (stays out of value) or rejection (returns to value) to determine direction.
Tails are single prints at extremes showing rejection (aggressive counter-activity). Poor highs/lows have multiple TPOs with no tail - buying/selling exhausted without rejection. Tails indicate strong S/R; poor extremes likely to be tested.
Each day type requires different strategy: Normal Day - fade extremes to POC. Trend Day - trade with trend only. Normal Variation - trade with extension. Neutral Day - fade both extremes. Double Distribution - trade the break. Identifying day type early is crucial.
A naked/virgin POC is a Point of Control from a prior session that price has not returned to. These are 'unfinished business' levels - price tends to revisit them. Track virgin POCs from recent sessions as potential targets.
Rotation factor measures net TPO periods making higher versus lower prints. Calculate by counting how many periods printed higher and subtracting those printing lower. Positive = bullish rotation. Negative = bearish. Use to confirm directional bias and validate day type.
Initiative activity is aggressive; drives price to new levels. Usually occurs early in session or at breakouts. Responsive activity is reactive; occurs at extremes or value edges. Initiative buying at new highs = bullish conviction. Responsive buying at value area low = support confirmed.
Combine TPOs from multiple sessions (5, 10, 20 days). Composite POC shows long-term fair value. Composite VA boundaries are major S/R. Balance areas in composites are institutional levels. View daily profiles within composite context for swing trading.
Use delta to confirm profile level reactions. At VAL, positive delta confirms long. At VAH, negative delta confirms short. Use footprint charts to see absorption or exhaustion at profile levels. Cumulative delta diverging from profile structure warns of reversal.
Define rules for day type classification (by 11 AM). Each day type has specific rules: Normal Day = fade VAH/VAL with confirmation, target POC. Trend Day = trade with trend, trail stops. IB Breakout = trade narrow IB breaks. Backtest with precise definitions.
