Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between ADX and the DI lines?

ADX measures trend STRENGTH (how strong, not direction) on a scale of 0-100. The +DI and -DI lines show DIRECTION (+DI > -DI = bullish, -DI > +DI = bearish). You need both: ADX for strength, DI for direction.

Why can't I just trade when +DI crosses above -DI?

DI crossovers in ranging markets (ADX < 20) create many false signals (whipsaws). Requiring ADX > 20-25 filters out these low-quality crossovers, dramatically improving win rate.

What's the default ADX period setting?

The default is 14 periods, as set by creator J. Welles Wilder. This works well for most applications. Some traders use 10 for more sensitivity or 20 for smoother signals.

Should I trade when ADX is falling?

Be cautious. Falling ADX means the trend is weakening. Don't enter new trend positions on falling ADX. If you have existing positions, consider tightening stops and taking partial profits.

What timeframe works best for ADX?

Daily charts work best for swing trading. Weekly for position trading. Lower timeframes (4-hour, hourly) have more noise. Start with daily charts to learn ADX behavior.

How do I avoid whipsaw DI crossovers?

Require ADX > 20 (preferably 25) at crossover, ADX to be rising, DI spread > 5-10 points after crossover, and price confirmation (breakout). Skip crossovers in ranging markets.

When does a high ADX become a warning sign?

ADX above 50 is considered very strong but potentially exhausted. If ADX peaks above 50 and starts declining while price makes new extremes, it's a warning of potential reversal. Tighten stops.

How do I combine ADX with moving averages?

Use ADX as a filter: only take MA crossovers/signals when ADX > 25. Use MAs as entry points: in confirmed ADX trends, buy pullbacks to the 20 MA. Use MA as trailing stop in ADX trends.

What if ADX is above 25 but the DIs keep crossing?

This suggests a choppy trend. The overall market may be trending but with significant volatility. Either wait for a clear DI separation (one DI clearly dominant) or reduce position size due to uncertainty.

Should I use ADX for short selling?

Yes. When ADX > 25 and -DI > +DI, you have a confirmed downtrend. Short signals work the same as long signals, just in reverse direction. Same rules apply.

How can I use ADX rate of change?

Calculate the slope/ROC of ADX itself. Rising ADX ROC = trend accelerating (good for entries). Falling ADX ROC = trend decelerating (prepare for exits). This gives earlier signals than waiting for ADX level thresholds.

How should I backtest an ADX system?

Define exact rules: entry (ADX > 25, +DI > -DI, rising), exit (ADX < 20 or DI cross), stops (2x ATR). Test on 5+ years data. Check parameter sensitivity (12-16 period). Separate results by trending vs ranging market periods.

How do multiple timeframe ADX signals work together?

Higher timeframes provide context: weekly ADX > 25 = major trend. Only trade daily signals in weekly trend direction. Use lower timeframe (4H) for entry timing. Alignment across TFs = highest probability.

How does ADX apply to options trading?

High ADX (trending) = directional strategies (buy calls/puts in trend direction). Low ADX (ranging) = premium selling strategies (strangles, condors). ADX also indicates HV levels - low ADX = low HV = potentially cheap options.

Can ADX be used for portfolio-level decisions?

Yes. Calculate ADX on market indices (XIU). High market ADX = favorable for trend strategies; allocate more to trend-following. Low market ADX = use mean reversion strategies. Adjust overall portfolio beta based on market ADX.
